What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates a website's identity and enables an encrypted connection. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, a security protocol that creates an encrypted link between a web server and a web browser.

Companies and organizations need to add SSL certificates to their websites to secure online transactions and keep customer information private and secure.

In short: SSL keeps internet connections secure and prevents criminals from reading or modifying information transferred between two systems. When you see a padlock icon next to the URL in the address bar, that means SSL protects the website you are visiting.

Since its inception about 25 years ago, there have been several versions of SSL protocol, all of which at some point ran into security troubles. A revamped and renamed version followed — TLS (Transport Layer Security), which is still in use today. However, the initials SSL stuck, so the new version of the protocol is still usually called by the old name.

What Is a Name Server?

If you own a domain or manage a website, you’ve undoubtedly come across name servers. These machines are responsible for moving traffic around the internet, but what is a name server, exactly? And more importantly, what do they do?

In basic terms, name servers are useful for connecting specific URLs with the correct IP address of the site’s server. But properly explaining how they work and why they are useful
is a little more involved. We’ve gathered everything you need to know about name servers, what they are and why they’re vital to making the internet run.

Simply put, name servers organize and route traffic across the internet. When you enter a website name in your browser bar and hit Enter, your browser starts a process of decoding the website you’re looking for and routing your traffic to the right web server. The name server sits in the middle of this process, holding all of the records for which websites are located where.

The domain name—that being, the website name you enter—isn’t easy for a computer to understand. The IP address—a string of numbers with more specificity—is much easier to digest. Name servers translate the domain name into an IP address, connecting information that’s easy for humans to understand with information that’s easy for computers to understand.

You can think of the process like a map. A city or street address is great for most people, but an experienced cartographer is more interested in coordinates. For browsing, it’s easier to enter “forbes.com” for most people, but a computer is more interested in the specific IP address of the web server you want to access.

With the domain name translated into an IP address, the name server can then route your request to the server with the website you’re looking for. This process is almost instant. Although it takes multiple steps, your browser can ping the name server, receive a response and direct you to the website you want in a matter of seconds.

The Pros and Cons of Responsive Web Design in 2023

Simon Sterne By Simon Sterne  |  6 days ago

Responsive web design has been such a success for many web designers that it is generally seen as the default approach to creating a website, but it’s not as cut and dried as all that.

There are many different factors to consider when deciding whether or not to use a responsive approach to designing your websites, such as budget, timescale, and audience.

In this blog post, we’ll weigh the pros and cons of responsive web design to help you make an informed decision.

What Is Responsive Web Design?

In short, responsive web design (RWD) is a modern approach to designing websites that allows the website to respond intelligently to the device on which it is being viewed.

RWD uses techniques like media queries and relative units to create a flexible design that can grow or shrink depending on the size of the screen. Rather than having multiple versions for mobile and desktop, as used to be the case, this type of web design offers an all-in-one solution with a flexible layout that can adapt to various scenarios.

RWD is often confused with mobile-first web design, firstly because mobile-first is a crucial technique of responsive workflows, and secondly because RWD grew in popularity as the number of mobile devices users viewed the web on grew. However, you can have a mobile-first site that isn’t responsive.

Responsive web design essentially eliminates the need to have separate versions of sites for mobile and desktop-style devices.
